A special television exchange was broadcast live from Ho Chi Minh City,Hue, and Can Tho City on February 2 to mark the 45th anniversary ofthe General Offensive and Uprising of Mau Than Spring in 1968.
Viewers watched film documentaries on the 1968 offensive anduprising, with Sai Gon-Gia Dinh (now Ho Chi Minh City) as themain battlefield because it was the headquarters of the US-backgovernment.
On the first night of the offensive,special task troops of the revolutionary forces attacked several targetswhich were considered “invincible”, such as the US embassy, thepresidential palace, Tan Son Nhat airport, and the radio broadcastingstation.
The Victory of Mau Than Spring is ahistoric event. It destroyed the US “localisation war” strategy andforced the US to take part in the negotiations at the Parisconference and subsequently withdraw troops from Vietnam.
Also on February 2, an art programme was televised live on VTV 1channel from the Hanoi Opera House to mark the 83 rd foundinganniversary of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
Participants and viewers had a chance to meet outstanding people whohave made important contributions to the nation’s industrialisation andmodernisation. The dignitaries included former Deputy Prime Minister VuKhoan and a naval soldier, Le Vuong Hoang who has just returned from hismission in Truong Sa archipelago.
