Hanoi (VNA) - Some 72 percent of Vietnamese women have joined thelabour force, higher than the average world percentage (42 percent), andranking only behind Cambodia (81 percent).
These figures were revealed in a recently-released report of the Centre forDevelopment and Integration, a Vietnamese non-governmental and non-profitorganisation.
The statistics are based on surveys and studies conducted by a network formigrant workers called M.net, set up by Oxfam, with sixVietnamese non-governmental members.
According to the report, the number of female labourers in Vietnam accounts for48.4 percent of the labour force. However, they still face inequalities atwork.
The report refers to examples in the sectors of textile, leather shoes andelectronics. Women make up for more than 70 percent of the labour force inthese sectors; however, they benefit only a small value of the global supplychain.
In the textile sector, labour cost accounts for only 2 percent of the wholesaleprice of a product, while employers enjoy 16 percent of the profit. Companiescause pressure to reduce labour cost. As a consequence, Vietnamese labourershave to take on a heavy workload, with more working hours but lower wages.
The report also points out gender inequality at work in Vietnam. As many as 7.8million female labourers of the non-official labour sector work in poorconditions.
Nearly 60 percent of unofficial female labourers have to take on work with lowwages, bad security at work, and lack of welfare, while the figure for malelabourers is only 31.8 percent.
There are more barriers for women than men in terms of career development atall skill levels.
Only 26 percent of leading positions are occupied by women, while women take onmore than 52 percent of simple work and 66.6 percent of household work.
Women make up over 57 percent of the unemployed in the group of unskilled labourersand more than half of the group receiving vocational training. Some 55 percentof unemployed women hold a bachelor’s degree.
Women are paid 11 percent lower than men for similar work. The gap is widenedin groups at higher skill levels, the report reveals.-VNA
