HCM City (VNA) – The summer volunteercampaigns launched by the Ho Chi Minh Youth Union’s Ho Chi Minh City chapter haveproven effective, Deputy Secretary of the chapter Ngo Minh Hai said at aconference in the city on August 30.
Local youths have actively engaged in voluntaryactivities in districts on the outskirts of HCM City as well as borderlocalities in the south-eastern, south-western, central and Central Highland regionsand Laos.
The local youth union opened trainingprogrammes, transferred science-technology, and provided farming techniques forfarmers while supporting youngsters in rural areas in doing business,introducing job opportunities for over 9,000 young people, and training socialskill practices for 86,000 others.
Young volunteers also got involved in upgrading50km of rural roads and repairing a dozen of bridges, while contributing tobuilding clean, safe and civilised apartment blocks and bus stations.
They presented gift packages worth 2.4 billionVND (102,729 USD) to more than 14,000 locals and youngsters from difficultbackgrounds, repaired and replaced electric equipment for 1,200 poorhouseholds, and granted 332 scholarships to needy students.
Particularly, in the Lao provinces of Attapeuand Champasak, 97 volunteers from HCM City provided health check-ups andmedicine for 4,500 disadvantaged people.
They also handed over 21 computers to Champasakyouth union, 11 computers to Attapeu and Champasak provinces, and three housesto poor Lao youngsters.-VNA
Several summer volunteer campaigns initiated in Ho Chi Minh City have helped improve the lives of thousands of residents in rural and mountainous areas and also inspired many young people to join the Communist Party of Vietnam, a senior official has said.
The Secretariat of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union’s Central Committee announced its plan for the upcoming summer voluntary campaign, which runs from June 3 to August 31.
Vietnam has achieved many remarkable results, such as the smoking rate among adults decreased from 23.8% in 2010 to 20.8% in 2021. The rate of exposure to secondhand smoke decreased from 73.1% to 45.6%.
