Vietnam’s Star Telecom (Unitel) held a ceremony in Vientiane on October 16 to mark its five-year operation in Laos.
Attending the event were several senior Lao officials and Minister Counsellor at the Vietnamese Embassy in Laos Hoang Xuan Hai.
Since its inception in October 2009, Unitel, a joint venture betweenLaos-Asia Telecom and Vietnam ’s military telecom group Viettel, hasbuilt a network of over 3,000 base-transceiver stations (BTS) in 17cities and provinces. It has also developed a distribution system ofmore than 100 agents throughout the country.
With 2.3 million subscribers, Unitel is leading Laos ’ telecom market with 49 percent of market share.
Inaddition to business activities, the company has carried out a numberof social programmes such as providing free internet services for morethan 600 educational establishments across the country and supportingflood victims, building village health clinics.
It has alsofunded a contest aimed at improving computer skills for local studentsand provided free Internet services for the 35 th General Assembly ofthe ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) in Laos .
In thecoming time, the company will strive to maintain its growth rate andincrease investment in innovating technology with a view to becoming thebest telecom service provider in Laos.-VNA
