Vietnam calls for full enforcement of long-term ceasefire in Libya

In an address to an online meeting ofthe UN Security Council (UNSC) on current issues in Libya on December 15, Quy reaffirmed Vietnam’s support for a comprehensivepolitical solution led and owned by Libyans on the basis of respecting its independence,sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
He welcomed important and positive developmentsin the country, especially the long-term ceasefire agreement reached by relevant parties and their consent to future elections.
The diplomat also stressed the support of the UNSC document that backs the implementationand monitoring of the ceasefire in line with the council’s relevant resolutionson Libya, and expressed a hope that the monitoring mechanism will ensure objectivity,effectiveness, efficiency, and close cooperation with stakeholders in Libya.
Stephanie Williams, Acting Special Representativeof the Secretary-General and head of the UN Supported Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), applauded the important political-security developmentsin the country over past weeks, in particular the signing of the long-term ceasefireagreement, and agreed with the progress towards presidential and parliamentary electionsbefore December 24, 2021.
In the time to come, the UNSMIL will continue to talk with stakeholders in Libyaabout plans to deploy and monitor the implementation of the agreement with the supportof the UN, and will submit a report to the UNSC before December 30, she said.
The UNSC issued a press release at the end of the meeting welcoming the effortsof the UNSMIL, neighbouring countries, and regional organisations in promotingthe peace process in Libya, and the positive developments in politics and securityin the country, while highlighting the importance of establishing an effective andreliable ceasefire surveillance mechanism./.
