Vietnam to actively contribute to 18th Shangri-La Dialogue: officer

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam always supports and will constructivelycontribute to the 18th Shangri-La Dialogue slated for May 31-June 2in Singapore, Deputy Defence Minister Sen. Lieut. Gen Nguyen Chi Vinh has said.
At a reception for Tim Huxley, ExecutiveDirector of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Asiain Singapore, in Hanoi on May 16, Vinh reaffirmed that Vietnamese DefenceMinister Gen. Ngo Xuan Lich will attend the event.
For his part, Tim Huxley briefed his hoston the programmes and topics of the upcoming 2019 Shangri-La Dialogue.
He lauded Vietnam’s role and thanked the country for supportingthe dialogue, contributing to its success over the years.
Vinh spoke highly of the significance of the Shangri-La Dialogue,as well as topics to be discussed during this year’s event, noting his hopethat it will continue to contribute to development in the Asia-Pacific.–VNA
Tim Huxley, Executive Director of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS)–Asia in Singapore, has urged Vietnam to send a high-ranking military delegation to the 2018 Shangri-La Dialogue and deliver a speech at the event slated for June in Singapore.
The Shangri-La Dialogue 2018 is set to last from June 1-3 in Singapore with the participation of defence ministers and officials from 50 countries worldwide and representatives from international organisations.
The 17th Shangri-La Dialogue closed in Singapore on June 3 after three days of sitting, featuring five plenary meetings and four simultaneous sessions.
Peter Brabeck-Letmathe, Interim Chairman of the World Economic Forum (WEF), and Borge Brende, WEF President and CEO, commended Vietnam’s flexible and effective economic governance and its strong economic performance.
The two PMs agreed on measures to strengthen bilateral relations in the future, especially the prompt signing of an action plan for implementing the countries' comprehensive strategic partnership, and the launch of upgraded VSIPs to include hi-tech parks, urban areas, and commercial zones.
PM Chinh requested ERIA to maintain close coordination with Vietnamese agencies and research institutes to promote policy research and consultations, and help the country increase productivity, quality, and competitiveness of the economy, especially in digital transformation, green transition, and circular economy, to contribute to achieving the rapid, sustainable development and double-digit economic growth goals it has set out for the coming decades.
The new Quang Tri province will include 78 commune-level units and features key assets such as the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, a long coastline, historical landmarks, three international border gates, deep-water ports, a modern transport network, and two airports.
